Maui Cart

Overview

Maui Cart brings products from multiple stores into one shopping app. Customers can browse by store or category, keep a shared cart, and see their orders from their account.

Problem

A catalog with many stores needs clear ways to browse. Customers should be able to explore a store, narrow the catalog by category, and keep their selections together as they shop.

Approach

The storefront combines store pages, category browsing, and search with a shared cart. Guests can start shopping before signing in. When they create an account, their cart carries over and they can return to their orders.

Technical decisions

Carry the cart across sign-in

Guests build a cart on their device. Signing in merges those selections into an account cart, so customers can continue shopping without adding everything again.

Load catalog pages on the server

The server fetches the public catalog for the initial page. Authenticated features use live data when needed, while guests can browse without opening a live subscription.

Tradeoffs

Keep checkout behind sign-in

Customers can browse and build a cart as guests, but placing an order requires an account. That adds a step at checkout and gives customers a place to return to their orders.

Current state

  • The current build includes store and category browsing, a shared cart, customer accounts, and order views.
  • The storefront adapts to mobile and desktop screens.
